Crop diversification seen as the way ahead
Article Abstract:
Agriculture accounts for 40% of Ghana's gross domestic product (GDP), 70% of employment and 40% of earnings from exports. Cocoa accounts for over 50% of cultivated land and Ghana ranks second in the world market of cocoa producers. The government aims to diversify away from cocoa and has partially liberalized the cocoa industry. Gold has overtaken cocoa in terms of export earnings. Cocobod regulates the cocoa industry and external marketing. This organization is being retained for political reasons though the International Monetary Fund would like to end its monopoly.

Agriculture: private ownership returns to the land
Article Abstract:
Land ownership has changed in the Czech Republic where private ownership was not permitted during the time of the Communists. State subsidies have been cut and land has been returned to previous owners. Around 97% of land is privately owned with 3% retained by the government. Family farms account for 25% of the land, co-ops for 50% and companies for the remainder. Only 5% of the labor force works on the land and agriculture contributes 3.3% of the Czech Republic's gross national product.

Agriculture
Article Abstract:
Romania has 5.3 million landowners with 14.76 million hectares, and benefits from fertile, irrigated terrain. Private ownership accounts for nine tenths of farming land. Improvements in agricultural production are seen as an important means of keeping inflation low. Food processing and agriculture also benefit from foreign investment, the government argues. Agriculture accounts for 37% of the work force. Agricola International is a major exporter of meat and other agricultural produce.
