Investors have moved away from a view of stocks as a long term investment, and younger investors especially are moving into short-term trading using new platforms, accepting higher risk levels. There are some problems such as difficulties in putting off settlement, and high transaction costs. CFDs, or trading in contracts to exploit a difference, has become popular, as has spread betting, and these activities involve effective virtual stock trading, with investors gaining access to price movements despite not owning the stocks.

Many fund managers focus on stock price indices, though their portrayal of reality is distorted. A rise in the index can lead to an exaggerated view of the bull market, and many smaller United Kingdom stocks have not performed well. The strongest performance has come from the 350 largest companies in terms of stock market capitalization. The seven largest stocks in the FTSE 100 index account for some 33% of the index's value. Many stocks outside the 350 largest companies are cheap.
