India produces homegrown GM cotton
Article Abstract:
Hyderabad, India-based consortium of seven Indian seed companies called Swarna Bharat Biotechnics Private (SBBPL) will receive the licenses for two genes that transfer resistance against various local pests, and thus breaking Monsanto's monopoly over genetically modified (GM) cotton. The consortium hopes that India will be able to enter into the era of self-sustaining agbiotech development due to the commercialization of the GM crops that is developed by local public research laboratories.

US-Indian agbiotech deal under scrutiny
Article Abstract:
The Indian agbiotech industry people are worried about the US-Indian deal on agriculture and biotech, as it might open the door for the US agbiotech companies to take control of India's homegrown agbiotech research and expose the local companies to more direct US competition. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is looking at the Indo-US deal as a perfect solution for breaking out of the low-productivity trap.
