Intranets open new opportunity: but will companies let others in?

The increasing use of corporate intranets has given rise to a new kind of marketing tool. Companies wishing to advertise their products can use the intranets to show their wares on the desktop computer screens of employees accessing their intranets. Marketers believe that selling through the intranet is more effective because of a one-to-one situation. However, marketers are still carefully weighing the advantages and disadvantages of these new marketing tool.

EDS initiative: company developing system to open intranets to outside suppliers
Article Abstract:
Electronic Data Systems (EDS) is developing an intranet which it hopes will allow its suppliers to access the PCs of EDS executives and clients. The intranet is called the Renascence Channel and has currently 70 companies as users which pay $25,000 to $150,000 depending on the amount of information which they want to be delivered. The fees paid by users are used for the construction of EDS's private Linq network which has a PointCast-like interface.

A survey by MATRIXX Marketing reveals that businesses obtain sites on the World Wide Web mainly to raise awareness and keep abreast with competition rather than to generate returns on investments. This implies that marketers go online primarily because of fear of being left behind in marketing innovations. However, Web investments will have to be justified in the next few months.
