The Indonesia seaport of Surabaya has become a growth center. The second largest city in Indonesia and the capital of Java province, Surabaya is home to the port of Tanjung Perak, the second largest port in Indonesia in terms of shipping volume after Jakarta. Surabaya is a modern city that sports new hotels and shopping malls featuring major Western retailers. Thirteen percent of the population enjoys an income of at least $40,000 annually.

China's GDP increased by 9.8% in the first three quarters of 1996, while inflation has decreased from 22% in 1994 to 16% in 1995 and 6.6% in 1996. Since Deng Xiao Peng implemented economic reforms, the Chinese economy has gone through three business cycles; currently, the economy is coming out of the third business cycle. A major problem hampering the economy is stagnating incomes for urban dwellers.

The Indonesian agricultural industry is still substantial, despite its decline from accounting for over on-half the country's GDP in 1970 to accounting for just 16.3% of Indonesia's GDP in 1996. Indonesian agricultural exports totalled $2.3 billion in 1996. The country is the largest exporter of rubber and the second largest producer of crude palm oil.
