Irish cash offers an easy escape route
Article Abstract:
British Dredging stockholders can accpet an offer from Grafton Group, which is both offering cash and its own stocks. The cash offer is higher than the stock price of British Dredging in the 10 years to 1998, and the stock offer is also good, but it is not easy to sell Grafton stocks in the UK. Grafton stocks are mainly traded in Dublin, Ireland. Irish stock prices have risen as the economy has grown, but the market can be patchy for smaller stocks such as Grafton's.

Redland has reported a drop in interim pre-tax profit and is reviewing its business, a process made more urgent by the Lafarge bid. Redland could be split up with the aggregates division disposed of. Redland's chairman, Rudolph Agnew, has rejected the idea of a merger. Other companies could bid for Redland, including Wienerberger, Hanson and RMC.
