Japan: so far, so good
Article Abstract:
The Japanese stock market is not likely to see a major rise in share prices until Japanese investors recover their enthusiasm for shares. Japanese investors carried out net sales of shares in 1995, while foreign investors were net purchasers. Banks and life assurance companies in Japan both suffer from constraints which prevent them from re-entering the market on a large scale. Private investors are still affected by the drop in prices which shares underwent.

Japan: the long road back
Article Abstract:
The Japanese economy is recovering from recession and the Economic Planning Agency is optimistic about the recovery. Local investors are less convinced than foreign investors that the recession has ended. Merrill Lynch sees recovery as continuing and does not see share prices as likely to be affected by rises in interest rates due to favorable factors elsewhere in the economy. Kleinwort Benson foresees a long period of earnings recovery.
