Jewelry and Watches
Article Abstract:
The economic recovery has boosted sales for industry in general. The industries of watches, diamonds and karat jewelry showed a modest growth in sales for 1983. However, there are some negative pressures on the horizon. The watch industry will be hardest hit. Japanese and Hong Kong manufacturers are glutting the market with inexpensive digital watches. They account for almost fifty per cent of the market. Sales on mechanical watches have dropped significantly. Individual manufacturers have been developing specific strategies to fight the anticipated high volume of imported watches. According to Harkness Cram, senior vice-president and management supervisor for the DeBeers consortium at N W Ayer, the diamond industry tends to be fairly recession proof. In the gold industry, surveys conducted by International Gold, an industry leader, indicate that most major chains expect the price of gold to remain stable throughout 1984.
