Just down the road
Article Abstract:
Only a few companies in the UK are opting to make long-distance relocations from London and the South East. One reason for this is that regional differences in office rents have narrowed substantially so that the incentive to relocate across the country is no longer as great. What is happening, instead, is that the majority of relocating companies are moving to nearby properties within a radius of 25 miles. However, unlike before, most of the relocations have been prompted by a consolidation of office sites resulting from corporate reorganizations. Relocations of government offices have also declined so that public sector relocation no longer plays the key role it used to in the past. The one really bright spot in the UK property markets may be the rise of direct foreign investment since it increases demand for commercial space. Investment by Asian companies, particularly the Japanese and the Koreans, may yet prove to be the market's saving grace.

Going public
Article Abstract:
An increasing number of chartered accountants in the UK are joining the public sector as the opportunities in the private sector become more scarce. Some of the areas that are attracting chartered accountants include the civil service, the health service, educational institutions, government industries, quangos and the Audit Commission. Contrary to common belief, the public sector offers wages comparable to what are offered in the private sector, as well as chances for promotion. Furthermore, working hours in the public sector are more regular, which should be attractive to family-oriented accountants. The Audit Commission's Margo Muris and accountancy adviser to the Department of Transport Tony Allum, both former private sector chartered accountants, are profiled.
