Company doctors are the unheralded heroes of the corporate world. These low-profile executives are responsible for the successful turnarounds of many finacially-troubled organizations, including some of the UK's largest groups. Company doctors are typically hired for the specific purpose of rescuing companies from the burden of massive debts. Ken Scobie, Sir Lewis Robertson, and David James are perhaps the most respected names in the field. Scobie is best remembered for his involvement with the rescue of Blackwood Hodge and currently participates in the restructuring of Brent Walker. Robertson, on the other hand, is best known for his involvement in the turnaround of firms such as Borthwicks and FH Lloyd. James has what is considered to be the most impressive track record among the three, having been involved with the rescues of such firms as North Sea Assets and Central and Sherwood.

The 400 million pounds sterling British funerals market is dominated by three companies that control 40% of the market. The three companies, Co-operative Retail Services, PFG Hodgson Kenyon International PLC and Great Southern PLC have increased market share through efficient centralization of facilities and the introduction of funeral prepayment plans. The remaining 60% of the market is held by independent practices that are usually small, family-run enterprises. Market analysts, however, predict that the three leading undertaking groups shall continue to increase their market share in the 1990s.

George Davies, the former CEO of the once high-flying Next fashion chain, has been quietly reestablishing his presence in the fashion retailing scene. Since being ousted from Next in 1988, Davies has concentrated his efforts on building his new company, the George Davies Partnership (GDP). The clothing retailer has a profitable contract to supply its George label to the ASDA chain and is finalizing plans to market the George label by mail order. GDP is also venturing into the staff apparel business, having tied up with several well-known corporate groups.
