Article Abstract:

Delaney Products Inc initiated a program to increase its competitiveness by increasing product quality. In the process, it was discovered that its cost accounting system failed to provide the information needed for strategic decisions. Restructuring integrated the implementation of an activity-based cost accounting system but failed to thoroughly investigate its merits. It was suggested that management prioritize information, set a basic system design, draft the facility process flow, gather information and make mid-course adjustments when developing a new cost accounting system.

Managers and accountants have been shifting to activity-based management and activity-based costing because traditional cost accounting systems no longer apply. Traditional costing approaches have been based on industrial environments where direct labor costs were much larger than overhead costs. However, the emergence of advanced technologies such as computer-aided design has dramatically tilted the balance in favor of overhead costs.
