Lex-man turns into FD shock
Article Abstract:
The media company Pearson has selected John Makinson as its new finance director. The former managing director of Financial Times, for which he wrote the Lex column, is a rarity in the finance community because he is not a qualified accountant and has no business qualification such as an MBA to speak of. Makinson says his lack of credentials is no roadblock to his work. He says he has been quite interested in accounting for a long time and has had a vast experience in business to compensate for this shortcoming. Besides, the role of financial management in Pearson is shifting from just being a 'numbers job' to a strategic partner, thereby restricting the role of plain accounting in his assignment. As further proof that his lack of certification is no hindrance to his success, rumor is going around that he will soon replace retiring Frank Barlow as the managing director of Pearson.

Some candy talking
Article Abstract:
UK beverage and confectionary giant Cadbury Schweppes (CS) is highly successful in the international marketplace. Its brands, including Canada Dry, Roses chocolates, Schweppes tonic water and Trebor Extra Strong mints, are well-established and known all over the world. The company has a presence in Europe, Africa, the Americas, Australia, Asia and the Far East. CS has already started exploring eastern Europe, considering Russia as the world's biggest confectionary market after the US. However, while there might be demand, Finance Dir. David Kappler believes that operating in Russia will not be easy and that it may take a while before local operations become profitable. The firm has gained entry into the US soft drinks market with its 1995 acquisition of Dr. Pepper/Seven-Up. Success in the US confectionary market has been more elusive due to the domination of Mars and Hershey.

Rock on a roll
Article Abstract:
Edel Music Group started as a one-man soundtrack mail order company when it was founded by music teacher Michael Haentjes in 1987. After 13 years, however, the company is ready to compete with the world's biggest music companies. Edel Music Group's success is attributed to its beginning-to-end operation with which it covers the full spectrum of the music business. Unlike other record companies, Edel Music Group discovers and develops its own artists, produces and manufactures their artists' compact discs at their own plant, and does the packaging, marketing and distribution of the finished products. Among the artists currently signed with Edel Music Group are teenage female German pop singer, Blumchen, US singer, Jennifer Paige, and pop and dance act, Sash.
