Life insurance windfalls
Article Abstract:
The UK life insurance industry may see bonuses for investors due to pressure on players to merge as sales drop and competition intensifies. There are some 100 UK life assurers and this figure could drop to between 30 and 40. Smaller and medium mutual companies are especially likely targets. Investors should not choose companies simply because they believe that a takeover may occur since there is a great variation in performance between companies, and potential targets may be poor performers.

Article Abstract:
There are indications that life companies who agree to pay a larger share ofthe compensation bill in the mis-sold pensions scandal, will find it easier when they attempt togive their shareholders surplus profits. However the Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) hasdenied any link between the two issues, although United Friendly is to pay 100% of thecompensation bill and has been given permission by theDTI to allocate surplus assets toshareholders.

Eurpe tackles insurers over 'unfair' terms: changes can have a monstrous effect on the performance of life assurance and personal pension policies particularly. But next month sees new rules which should help to show investors what they are letting themselves in for
Article Abstract:
New rules from Europe will affect opaque charging on life insurance and pension policies. They will force companies to be more open about increases in charges on existing policies, as even small rises can have a significant effect on the performance of a policy. This follows recent changes to the disclosure rules which give UK consumers more information on costs.
