Life on the frontier
Article Abstract:
Efficient portfolios of investments are difficult to achieve since past performance is no sure guide to future performance. Investment software can still help in developing an efficient portfolio. Investors who want a low level of risk can boost returns and reduce variability by using convertibles for 25% of their portfolios. Convertibles are usually held to boost income and maintain exposure to the equity that the convertible represents. Merrill Lynch has produced research showing the benefits of portfolios, though this could be because they performed especially well during the period under study, which was Nov 1995 to April 1999.
