Meeting a mauling
Article Abstract:
There are mixed signs as to whether a rise in US inflation could lead to a drop in stock prices. US unemployment is 4%, and gross domestic product is rising at levels above the long-term average, and both these factors could create inflationary pressures. There is also concern about the rate of growth of the US money supply, and that of other developed economies except Japan. Some factors have tended to depress inflation, such as low energy costs resulting from low petroleum costs, and low import costs resulting from the high value of the US dollar, but this could change.

An absence of perspective
Article Abstract:
There is instability in world equity markets but it is unclear whether the bull run in stocks is ending, and if it ends, whether it will end spectacularly or with less impact. Charles Ellis argues that market timing tends not to work over the longer term, in his work 'Winning the Loser's Game'. He is also concerned about risks in the market as a whole due to an overall rise in stock prices. Modern equity markets have only existed for a short period and there are risks involved in seeking to extrapolate from a limited amount of data.
