Mining
Article Abstract:
The mining industry has been affected by falling prices linked to lower demand, increased inventories, and concern about a recession world wide. Hedge funds are also exerting pressure on the sector through selling commodities to be delivered in the future. Project deferrals and production cuts are expected, and Asian economies will have to rebuild, so demand and supply should achieve a better balance after 2000. Price movements may then be triggered by hedge funds pushing prices upwards.

British Biotech: loss-making winner
Article Abstract:
British Biotech has seen a rise in its share price following successful phase 2 trials for an anti-cancer preparation, Marimastat. The company could join the FT-SE100 index without having reported a profit. Analysts are concerned that UK biotechnology shares may be overvalued. British Biotech itself has a good chance of being able to market the drug, but other biotechnology companies have seen share price rises that are less justified.
