U.S. Army goes expeditionary
Article Abstract:
US Army Chief of Staff Gen Eric Shinseki, in a statement given in Dec 1999, wants the Army to be transformed into a rapid-deployment force to be a vital part of an expeditionary mission which is traditionally a Marine Corps territory. The new-model Army is to be based on lightweight wheeled vehicles similar to the Marine Corps. Observers see Shinseki's move as a solution to the Army's incapability for rapid deployment well as part of the rivalry between the Army and the Marine Corps.

Communicating underwater
Article Abstract:
Lockheed Martin-Sanders is developing an underwater link for the naval Underwater Systems Center. It involves a technique using modern computers such as the UYK-20 computer which employs a separate probe of the communications channel. The company successfully demonstrated a 35-nm communication range between a surface ship and a sdubmarine at the low frequency. Using a high-frequency link, it demonstrated submarine-to- unmanned underwater vehicle communication at 2.5 nautical miles.

Moving toward missile defense
Article Abstract:
The UK Royal Navy announced in June 2000 that it will acquire US Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC) for seven of its Type 23 frigates and for the Daring-class (Type 45) air defense frigate currently being developed. The command systems of both types of frigates are similar so that problems likely to be encountered on the Type 23 can be expected on the Type 45. The UK purchase is important because it will provide a new CEC link among NATO ships.
