NatWest Smaller Companies Investment Trust
Article Abstract:
NatWest Smaller Companies Investment Trust has Gervais Williams as its lead fund manager and he specialises in smaller firms. The fund aims to identify mismatches between its perceptions of a cimpany's future and that of the market. The main 10 holdings of the trust include Waste Recycling, Skillsgroup and Development Securities. The fund has outperformed its benchmark and has performed close to the top of this sector, so this is a good choice for the long term. Larger discounts of some other trusts may mean that they are better short-term investments.

HIP surgery may bring pain for investors
Article Abstract:
Foreign and Colonial is changing its High Income Plan in a number of ways. The target yield will be pegged to the level of short-term interest rates, with an additional 2%. The management fees will be raise to 1.5%. Investors will have an immediate benefit, but short-term rates could drop if the United Kingdom joined European monetary union. A high yield would then erode investors' capital, and Foreign and Colonial argues that concern over capital erosion is one reason for the changes.

Exmoor's U-turn
Article Abstract:
Panther Securities no longer appears to be interested in acquiring Exmoor Dual. Exmoor Dual's board had promised plans to liquidate the investment trust, but these also appear to have been abandoned. Exmoor Dual has improved its performance since 1996 when its investment strategy was changed, but long-term returns have been poor. Shareholders should have been given an opportunity to vote on plans for liquidation, but their promised escape routes have disappeared.
