Navy acquiring systems to rescue trapped submariners
Article Abstract:
Help is on the way for hapless submariners trapped at the bottom of the ocean as the US Navy acquires and deploys systems of rescue, the basic one being a suit that covers a crew member's entire body that prevents hypothermia and that provides a quick ascent to the surface. The submariners themselves are to be fitted with emergency hatches and escape mechanisms and the submersible Pressurized Rescue Module would rescue those lying in deeper waters.

The chairman of the US House Armed Services Committee (HASC), Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, questions senior Navy brass whether the sea service could build mini-aircraft carriers and how little they could be and also whether diesel submarines might be feasible. His questions were raised when the Navy was readying itself to begin construction on the next-generation CVN 21 aircraft carrier in 2008 at Northrop Grumman Corp unit at a cost of US $14 billion.
