The new report of the Congressional Research Service (CRS) indicates that around the year 2012, even if the submarine fleet is reduced from 55 to 40 vessels, the United States Navy would have to purchase at least two Virginia Class submarines each year. Carriers to cost $31.7 billion; V-22 costs are stable; SBIRS high breaches limit

The new Selected Acquisition Reports (SAR) estimated in August 2004 that three next-generation aircraft carriers for the Navy would cost a total $31.749 billion, or about $10.583 billion each. The various factors responsible for driving cost increase such as Space-Based Infrared System High (SBIRS High) program is highlighted.
