Networks become more useful for accounting firms
Article Abstract:
Accounting firms can enhance the usefulness of their computer networks with network-specific software packages such as the workgroup productivity software (WPS). WPS is composed of several applications that do not require physical proximity, that improve the capability to schedule people and resources, and that allow information to be shared by a number of people at the same time. With the WPS, accounting practitioners can communicate with other people using electronic mail. Electronic versions of lists of information and important tax codes and regulations can be installed on the network, thereby eliminating the need to maintain and update cumbersome paper versions. Group authoring systems can also be used for projects that involve extensive writing. One disadvantage to using WPS is that it uses it a large portion of the computer's memory.

Tax research comes into the computer age
Article Abstract:
Tax accounting firms must be able to store and retrieve large amounts of information. Computer technology in the form of CD-ROMs and large capacity disk drives has made the storage and retrieval of information and documents much easier. The storage and retrieval of information and documents will be made even easier if practitioners use CD-ROM and hard disks for different tasks, splitting the number of tax research tasks between the two media. CD-ROMs are useful storage devices for documents and data libraries, including detailed summaries of case law and rulings. Large capacity disk drives are ideal for the quick accessing of frequently used documents, and can provide reference information for more thorough searches of the information contained in the libraries stored in the CD-ROM.

Developing a spreadsheet can save time and money
Article Abstract:
Accounting firms can save much time and money by developing their own electronic spreadsheets. The development of electronic spreadsheets typically involves the creation of the spreadsheet, the creation of keyboard macros, the addition of user interface macros, and the compilation of the spreadsheet. Baler Software Corp's (Rolling Meadow, IL) Baler 5.1 is a compiling utility that allows firms to compile their own electronic spreadsheets into stand-alone programs. Baler 5.1, which costs $495, makes a spreadsheet look more professional. Spreadsheets compiled with Baler 5.1 are faster than the original, allow customization, and support an extended Lotus 1-2-3 macro language and help commands.
