Never too late to stop smoking
Article Abstract:
The health risks associated with smoking are well known. They include a higher susceptibility to lung cancer in middle age and an increased risk of early death from heart disease. Smoking is not only harmful for those who persist in the habit, it is also dangerous to those who are passively exposed to the carcinogens in cigarette smoke. Despite the dangers, many smokers refuse to give up the habit. Many of them rationalize their continued smoking by maintaining that giving up the habit would not necessarily improve a long-time smoker's health. This rationalization is not only inaccurate, it is foolhardy. The fact is that even heavy smokers can realize a benefit from giving up smoking. Indeed, it is estimated that the risk of developing heart disease is reduced by half one year after the habit is given up. The risk of lung cancer is also known to decrease over time if the habit is dropped.
