Commercial nonsilver photographic printing systems are predicted to become significant competitors in 2001, although silver-halide photography and photofinishing is firmly entrenched as the backbone of the industry. The wave of the future is high-speed, digital inkjet printers designed for photofinishing applications that use scanned film images from traditional negatives and digital camera files to produce photographic-quality color prints on a production basis.

TV and PC battle brews over consumer snapshot viewing

Several photography service companies are testing the concept of using interactive TV to allow consumers to view and order digital prints through the medium. These companies include Ni4U Corp, PictureIQ Corp, Eastman Kodak Co and PictureVision Inc. Although many consumers may still prefer viewing digital snashots on a color computer monitor because of its resolution clarity, this could change dramatically with the availability of high-definition TV sets.
