New values catch on slowly in Europe
Article Abstract:
Attitudes toward shareholders are gradually changing in mainland Europe and the notion of shareholder value is gaining ground. Shareholders tend to be regarded as a nuisance in France but changes have become more apparent in Germany. The strength of medium-sized companies in Germany means the stock market has yet to be developed. Shareholders' rights are often abused in Italy as is shown by the example of Olivetti. Financial openness is more common among Nordic companies and in the Netherlands.

A borse of a different colour
Article Abstract:
The German stock market has become more accessible to UK investors. Germany has seen a greater need to attract investment from abroad. Banks are still major investors in German companies, but are less keen on long-term large stakes. Share prices have been split by some companies to attract investors previously deterred by the high cost of German shares. UK brokers are developing expertise in this market, and UK investors can choose from a range of broking services.

Germany: restructuring
Article Abstract:
The German equity market could benefit from an improvement in the economy as a whole, argues Goldman Sachs. Structural problems are being tackled by German companies, and earnings expectations for German firms for 1997 could undergo upgrades. A number of factors will affect the market such as the policy of the Bundesbank, exchange rates, and prospects for economic growth in Germany. Restructuring may be gradual but could have a major impact in relation to the US.
