'No crisis' says Crest
Article Abstract:
The UK stock exchange is transferring to an electronic share settlement system called Crest, and small brokers face problems with the system. Crest's board has decided that the schedule should be adhered to, with completion in April 1997. The transfer of 17 large securities has been delayed and there was a backlog involving 30,000 deals unsettled in early Nov 1996. Some small brokers may not survive the transfer and clients are likely to face higher costs. Crest argues that the process should not be delayed because of a small number of firms.

Seven reasons to sell shares
Article Abstract:
There are a number of indicators of downturns in the stock market. They include calcluations based on price-earnings ratios, and data from charts used by technical analysts. One pattern identified by chartists is the head and shoulders formation, with three peaks, and the middle one higher than the peak on each side. This pattern indicates a subsequent drop. Investment fashions can lead to stock price drops once the price is no longer buoyed by the fashion. There are general rules, but ultimately investors have to decide for themselves.

Crest starts to crumble
Article Abstract:
Crest is a new electronic share settlement system launched in the UK in 1996. The system has encountered problems and the board will meet in Nov 1996 to decide how to tackle these problems. CrestCo is managing the new system and has announced a delay in the transfer of 17 securities to Crest. Small brokers could be seriously affected by settlement problems and the system is expensive for brokers to install and manage. Some brokers have increased minimum charges for dealing as a result of this cost increase.
