J. Sainsbury has lost its leading role among UK supermarkets and four brokers of a sample of six rate the company's shares a hold, with two rating them a sell. Holders include Paribas Capital Markets which does not see a short-term improvement in volume sales. Gilbert Eliott, Deutsche Morgan Grenfell and Mees Pierson are also holders. Nikko Securities is a seller and is concerned about competition in the market. BZW is the second seller and is concerned about the company's shrinking share of the market comprised of customers aged from 35-years-old to 44-years-old, who tend to spend most.

The buyer is Charterhouse Tilney which sees an improvement in the company's profit quality. The holders are Charles Stanley, Societe Generale Strauss Turnbull, NatWest Securities and UBS. Credit Lyonnais rates the stocks a sell and is concerned about the supermarket sector as a whole.

J Sainsbury faces competition which has intensified in UK food retailing. The company has lost a ranking of first in the market and has not responded rapidly to changes. A sample of six brokers consulted gave a range of views, Brokers rating the shares a sell include ABN-AMRO Hoare Govett, which Credit Lyonnais has upgraded Sainsbury shares to a hold. Nat West Securities rates the shares a hold, while SBC Warburg is the only brokers of the six with a buy recommendation.
