ONR laser power jumps 10-fold; further 10-fold leaps seen

The Office Naval Research (ONR) and Department of Energy (DOE) free electron laser has increased its power output tenfold, from an initially envisioned one kilowatt to 10 kilowatts, to become the most powerful 'tunable' laser on the planet. DD(X) Class of destroyers may be fitted with lasers weapons in the next generation that are designed with immense electrical generating capacity, providing power for needs ranging from ship propulsion to rail guns.

Wynne warns contractors to curb UAV costs

Defense contractors must dominate rising costs of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as systems added to the robotic craft have caused market prices to rise. Michael Wynne, the top Pentagon procurement policymaker, noted that UAVs inherently help to cuts costs as they are unmanned, adding that a single UAV can gather as much information as several warfighters.
