Omnis - a DIY solution to complex data problems
Article Abstract:
Blyth Software's 445 pounds sterling Omni 3 Plus is an applications generator program that can run on Macintosh. Each database can hold up to 24 files, 12 of which can be used simultaneously. File capacity for a single database is 160 Mb. Each file will hold up to 120 fields and unlimited records. The ability to control arrays for input and output of data is a convenient feature. The user builds sequences from Omni's built-in commands to create tasks. Each sequence may contain up to 120 command lines, and these may be joined together. Several report formats are available, and database utilities allow for data exchange between Omni and other programs or other microcomputers. Omni has multi-user capabilities, rare in a microcomputer. Documentation is good, but some information should be available on-line.

Can your PC communicate with the data base?
Article Abstract:
There is a growing, but still new, market in micro-mainframe linking software. Such links are necessary to enable the personal computer user to link up with a mainframe computer for access to more data. Precautions are necessary, especially since it is such a new industry. For instance, the user should be sure that data is being extracted in real-time and not from old files, and should understand software licensing rules. Clearly defined procedures are important to get the most from usage. Budgeting can be done on upload-download, but other financial packages can be used as well. Be careful before buying new equipment because better versions may come along soon.
