Taking stock
Article Abstract:
There are attractions to holding cash at a time when the Federal Reserve is hinting about the possibility of interest rates being raised, and cash allows for stocks to be bought if prices fall. A compromise approach is to buy slowly, adding new stocks to the portfolio when there are compelling reasons for buying them. Standard methods of valuing stocks are not helpful when the aim is to locate companies that can secure a dominant market position. Companies in the old economy are likely to be hit by increased competition so have seen drops in their stock prices.
