Output allocative and technical efficiency of banks
Article Abstract:
Article examines the output allocative and technical efficiency for a sample of small banks operating in 1982. Data was obtained from the Federal Reserve's Functional Cost Analysis program. Information on quantities and prices of outputs and quantities of inputs were required for the study. Inputs included labor, interest bearing small deposits, occupancy expense and purchased or borrowed funds. Outputs included property and commercial loans, consumer loans and investments in US securities. Results indicated that the banks in the sample were output inefficient.

Efficiency effects of horizontal (in-market) bank mergers
Article Abstract:
Article examines whether banks involved in horizonal mergers achieve efficiency improvements relative to other firms. The analysis involves bank mergers form 1981 to 1986. Various expense ratios are used to measure efficiency. Findings are based on 898 bank mergers thought to have the greatest potential to result in efficiency gains. Results indicate consistently that horizontal bank mergers in the analysis did not generally end in efficient gains.
