Conglomerates carry on despite demerger trend
Article Abstract:
Hanson's plan to carry out a demerger could be interpreted as a trend among conglomerates, as suitable acquisitions become increasingly difficult to locate. There are newer conglomerates such as Wassall and Tomkins which are different from older conglomerates such as BTR which is more like Hanson. There is more scope for newer conglomerates to grow than older conglomerates such as Hanson. Hanson's shares rose after the demerger was announced and then fell again.

An Abell escape
Article Abstract:
Suter has accepted a bid from a shell company called Ascot which aims to sell subsidiaries and develop activities that are not sold. Suter was developed by David Abell and was criticised for acquiring stakes in quoted firms. Ascot has experience of selling businesses and it is unclear which of Suter's activities will be retained. Ascot will have to raise funds due to the deal and Ascot shares have droped in price following initial rumors of the takeover.
