Pentagon would tighten purse strings on basic research

An analysis by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) revealed that an ongoing dispute between the pentagon and House appropriators over defense research and development funding shows no sign of compromise. Kei Koizumi, director of R&D budget and policy programs at AAAS in Washington stated that the Department of Defense (DOD) keeps pushing the research dollar total downward and Congress responds by jerking it back up.

A defense analyst has stated that the rational discussion of the US national defense program is hampered by the fact that the defense budget does not give a realistic picture of overall defense spending. Winslow Wheeler, a director at the Center for Defense Information, has given his views on the defense budget and the defense-related expenditures that are not included in the defense budget.
