Penton on acquisition spree; plans to go public
Article Abstract:
Penton Publishing has acquired Industrial Shows of America and Industrial Shows of America/International, which produced 24 international trade shows in the US and Latin America. Tom Kemp, chairman and CEO of Penton, would not divulge the other two acquisitions that the company is poised to make and gave only a hint that they are business-to-business media companies. The company is also awaiting the decision of the International Revenue Service regarding a tax-free distribution of Penton shares to Pittway shareholders. It is still undecided on whether it should go public on the NASDAQ or NYSE.

CMP tests plan to send one sales rep per client to sell all publications
Article Abstract:
CMP Media Inc has created a program that allows each of its sales representatives to sell all computer publications to a single primary advertiser. The program, called Customer First, is being tested in the company's Southeast region and will eventually be launched nationwide by the end of 1998. Under the plan, sales representatives will function more as strategic thinkers and marketing partners while the publishers of individual magazine titles will act as brand managers. CMP is developing intranets and gated extranets as part of the Customer First program.

Financiers back in buying mood

An increasing number of investment firms are acquiring magazine companies. The spate of acquisition deals, which is spearheaded by financiers, is an indication that the media market is once again on the upswing.
