Personnel power: the fight against fraud
Article Abstract:
Companies that wish to eliminate computer abuse should not confine their computer security policies to measures that emphasize technical controls alone. In addition to setting up adequate security controls, they should focus on the human element in computer abuse and implement rigorous personnel policies that would help deter employees from compromising computer security. Personnel practices that could serve as a potent internal control on computer abuse include the establishment of recruitment procedures that weed out potentially delinquent employees, the institution of formal policies on the handling of confidential information, and the rotation of jobs to enable checks to be made on the work of employees who participate in data processing operations. Other personnel practices that can be used to improve computer security are the segregation of duties in data processing and the institution of effective performance reviews.

Are traditional approaches to redundancy redundant?
Article Abstract:
Downzising has become a common strategy employed by business organizations to ensure their survival in a recessionary economy. However an effective way to carry out workforce reduction is yet to be developed. There are many firms that try to assuage their guilt by offering generous ex gratia payments, which does really help their bottom line. When Reed Personnel Services PLC found that it had to downsize, the firm tried to find a way of handling the situation that was sympathetic but would not be financially burdensome. Reed's meeting with its redundant personnel led to the development of an approach that involved tracking the progress of each in finding new employment and continuing support to these employees in certain cases, or providing incentives for redundant workers to stay at a lower salary. Using flexible workforces may help firms like Reed to avoid having to deal with the unpleasant task of downsizing.
