Spirit of adventure
Article Abstract:
Venture capital trusts (VCTs) have raised more than 500 million pounds sterling since they were introduced by the 1995 Finance Act, according to a study by PriceWaterhouseCoopers. At least 70% of a VCT fund has to be invested in unquoted companies trading mostly in the UK, with 30% in ordinary shares. Investors can choose from aim-based or generalist VCTs, and their attraction is their combination of a fund manager with a good track record, generous tax reliefs and a spread of investments.

Affording an ageing population: the ageing European population is likely to produce many challenges for governments over the coming decades
Article Abstract:
The UK is already experiencing the trend towards an ageing population which can create both problems and opportunities for the financial markets. The ageing population will raise pressure on government spending on pensions, hospitals and healthcare, which could lead to higher personal tax bills. The UK government has encouraged people to take out personal pension plans. The Goode proposals are expected to have an impact on how pension funds invest their investors' money.
