Plans for a Doctoral Program of Study Based on the IPRA Model for Public Relations Education
Article Abstract:
Ball State University is initiating a doctoral program in public relations. The program is based on a professional model developed by the International Public Relations Association. Five years of professional experience is required for entrance into the program. Students must have a college degree with a broad knowledge of humanities, history, social sciences and economics. The program recognizes the public relations function as part of an organizational management team. The program will be aligned with an interdisciplinary center at the university.

A review of the public relations educational program at Ball State University is presented. Public relations education is provided through the journalism department. There is also a graduate public relations program. The curriculum combines theory with skill development for practical application. The public relations function is recognized as the communications management of an organization. Basic communicating skills are emphasized.
