Public relations: the conflict with 'true & fair'
Article Abstract:
A problem in the presentation of company performance is the manipulation of data by corporate officials and public relations (PR) consultants. PR consultants are usually producing what the clients want, and it is up to the company to control the final product. Fanciful presentations may be an attempt to alleviate the boredom endemic to many corporate presentations. In addition, some of the misleading items may have originated within the company. Statements of Standard Accounting Practices can also lead to the generation of misleading information by requiring the elimination of purchased goodwill against reserves from the accounts immediately upon acquisition. Two aspects of financial reporting that can lead to misleading financial reports are omission and selectivity, although the intent to mislead may not be deliberate.

A lesson in company pathology
Article Abstract:
The analysis of financial reports can deduce the various factors that bring about business failure. Based on a study conducted by County NatWest Ltd on 45 failed companies, the process of expansion was seen as an indicator of failure. Rapid expansion, expansion by acquisition, expansion by overdraft, and rocketing gearing were common characteristics of failed firms. The cover up of unfavorable financial returns in final reports through increased earnings per share was evident in 66% of the business that failed. In the final stages of business failure, resignation of board directors was a usual occurrence with boardroom conflict manifested in the final corporate reports.
