A route through the car buying maze
Article Abstract:
UK car buyers traditionally used their savings or a bank loan, but they have a wider range of options such as hire purchase and personal contracts. Cash is the cheapest way to finance such a purchase though this should only be used if purchasers are left with enough funds for an emergency. Personal loans allow buyers to own the car and pay to a schedule that suits them. Hire purchase agreements leave the car owned by the finance company. Personal contracts allow part exchange, retaining the car or returning it.

Peugeot calls for state aid
Article Abstract:
Peugeot-Citroen's chairman, Jacques Calvet, has asked for an additional extension of French government subsidies to encourage consumers to replace their cars. The subsidies are scheduled for withdrawal at the end of Sep 1996. The subsidies have tended to boost sales of smaller vehicles and this has affected margins for automobile producers. Renault is less keen on subsidies than is Peugeot for this reason. Car sales are likely to drop in 4th qtr 1996 if the subsidies are withdrawn.
