RMC
Article Abstract:
RMC produces concrete and has been affected by problems in the German market, which accounts for 25% of sales. The company has also seen demand in the US hit by poor weather in California, though RMC should benefit from federal roadbuilding programs. Conditions are weakening in the United Kingdom, and there is increased competition. Lafarge could expand further in the UK market. Aggregate Industries and Tarmac could merge, which would create problems for RMC. The company does, however, have a strong balance sheet, and should be aided by UK interest rate falls.

Rugby: window of opportunity
Article Abstract:
Rugby is a UK company producing doors and windows which also supplies cement. The company has been hit by a drop in housing production in 1995, but 1996 could be a better year. Reductions in interest rates and taxation may increase sales. Windows and doors account for 67% of the company's sales, while cement accounts for 20%. Cement demand has been hit by a drop in road building and construction activity as a whole. The company's profit is forecast at 84 million pounds sterling for 1996.

RMC
Article Abstract:
RMC saw lower demand and profits from its German operations in 1st half 1996 in contrast to a rise in profit for 1995. UK profits also dropped as did returns from other European operations. The US division performed well in this period. Activities in Europe and the UK should recover, but a major recovery could be slow to emerge and result may not improve significantly until 1998 due to attempts to control public spending in France, Germany and the UK.
