Reduce empty rhetoric and empty risks
Article Abstract:
Functionality, the primary standard by which car designs are measured, offsets whatever risks are taken in product development. American automobiles lose to foreign competitors because of poor designs that worsen rather than enhance vehicle efficiency and utility. Consumers, due to the greater variety of choices afforded them, have become more discriminating with their investments. Industry should focus on creating products that satisfy their customers instead of uselessly criticizing Japanese manufacturers.

A question of software
Article Abstract:
Automobile manufacturers blame poor Japanese patronage of American cars as the root of the industry's collapse. Executives fail to see that the ability to comply with what customers want is as important as the features they incorporate in their products. The Japanese turned initial failures into successful business ventures by carefully monitoring and meeting client expectations. American firms have much to gain by implementing the same customer-oriented policy.

Let's talk transportation
Article Abstract:
American cars have lost the quality for which they were once known. While there is valid concern for customers' preference for Japanese cars, management must start solving the industry's problems by focusing on long-term issues. Car manufacturers should strive to develop new ideas and come up with products that answer consumers' specifications, even to the extent of redefining current modes of transportation, in order to revive the faltering industry.
