A time to rethink retirement planning goals and structures
Article Abstract:
Tax practitioners should advise their individual and corporate clients of the favorable changes in the area of retirement planning made by recent legislation such as the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997. Rules limiting contribution and benefit amounts in qualified retirement plans have been eased. More opportunities for deferral planning have resulted from the elimination of accumulations and excess distributions taxes and the creation of new plans such as the Roth IRA.

The marriage penalty: as viewed by you, as viewed by me, and the fellow behind the tree
Article Abstract:
Proposals to eliminate the so-called tax marriage penalty at a government cost of approximately $15 billion may be viewed differently depending upon different persons' perspectives. Most proposals would add complexity to the tax code by attempting to retain existent tax marriage bonuses while eliminating about 60 provisions with the penalty. Over 50% of couples in 1996 received marriage bonuses, while 42% received penalties.
