Schumpeter's ghost: Is hypercompetition making the best of times shorter?
Article Abstract:
Two large longitudinal samples of firms to discover which industries, if any, exhibit performance that is consonant with Schumpeterian theory and the assertions of hypercompetition are examined. It is found that competitive advantage has become significantly harder to sustain and that the phenomenon is limited neither to high-technology industries nor to manufacturing industries.

Article Abstract:
The response addressing in a more detailed nature of the methodological and statistical assumptions made by variance components analysis or ANOVA is presented along with their implications for the 'puzzling' results obtained when these techniques are employed. The limitations of employing an autoregressive approach to measuring persistence of abnormal profits are examined.
