Serving to make Britain a winner
Article Abstract:
The UK Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), which is responsible for staging the Wimbledon championships, recently created the post of finance director. Chris Halder became finance director in November 1989 and is currently rationalizing the computer systems used by the LTA and meeting with the six autonomous departments that make up the LTA: national training, marketing and sponsorship, competitions and tournaments, county and club, the LTA trust, and research. Most of the LTA's income comes from the annual Wimbledon championship, which brought in 9.2 million pounds sterling in 1989, and to a lesser extent, from corporate sponsorships. The LTA is one of the only organizations in the UK sponsoring tennis and Halder has made it his goal to help the LTA do more with its current level of funding.

Doing the Kwik-step to stay ahead
Article Abstract:
Kwik Save Discount Group PLC has for many years successfully targeted and dominated the discount end of the British supermarket industry. However, the discount supermarket chain is facing renewed competition from both struggling middle-tier supermarkets seeking new business and foreign competitors that are expanding aggressively into the UK. To counter the threat from its rivals, Kwik Save has begun a rapid expansion policy designed to help it maintain its dominant share of the discount market. Kwik Save Finance Dir Simon Moffat explains that the firm's strategy of concentrating on just 2,500 lines, as compared to 15,000 lines for other supermarket stores, should help it maintain the cost-effective pricing strategy that has long been the key to its success.
