Smooth operators
Article Abstract:
Business computers rely on the ability of operating systems to run applications such as word-processing, tax-return computations, e-mail, and spreadsheets. Operating systems such as UNIX and OS/2 Warp have failed to capture the interest of business users largely because of their inability to offer a better selection of applications. Financial problems at Apple have made consumers weary of investing in their systems. The only two major players left are Microsoft, with Windows 95/NT, and Novell, with IntranetWare 4.11, whose products offer advantages such as client server applications and multi-server networks.

Office engines
Article Abstract:
Software companies in the local area network (LAN) business are prompted to bring more efficient products as LAN continues to become an essential office tool, handling more tasks in more complex environments. Competition is expected to heat up between Novell's NetWare 5.0 and NetWare 4.2 for small businesses and Microsoft's upcoming Windows 2000 software, the Windows NT 4.0 upgrade that promises to offer what is projected to be the most advanced operating system ever. Linux is also a key player in the industry, especially since its product has a price advantage over all other network software.
