Something rotten in the state of the arts
Article Abstract:
The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) received an annual subsidy from the Arts Council of 6,045,000 pounds sterling for 1990, but according to RSC Financial Controller Bill Wilkinson, the company faces a deficit of 1.9 million pounds sterling. The RSC has had to scale back the season by four-and-one-half months in order to keep the deficit at a manageable level which, according to Wilkinson, would have exceeded 4 million pounds sterling without such a move. A Cabinet Office study had recognized that the RSC was seriously underfunded and recommended the indexing of its subsidy, but the recommendation was not enacted. Wilkinson points out that the RSC does supplement its income with sponsorships, but believes that the time consumed by pursuing sponsorships makes the exercise counterproductive.
