Midland Independent Newspapers was hit by a rise in newsprint costs of 35% in 1st half 1996 and operating profit from newspapers dropped to 7.6 million pounds sterling from 9.4 million pounds. The company has carried out disposals in order to focus on the West Midlands region of England. Operating profit from activities other than newspapers rose to 2.67 million pounds from 1.29 million pounds. The group should achieve a profit of 15.5 million pounds for 1996 not including one-offs.
