State trading and non-price discriminatory trade: the case of Japan's wheat imports
Article Abstract:
A theoretical and statistical method was developed to determine the presence of non-price discriminatory trade in the Japanese wheat imports. The test is administered by making a statistical comparison of the mean markups by port of import, by class of wheat and country origin. Results of the test reveal that Japan favors importing Australian Soft White wheat and Canada Western Red Spring wheat rather than US Hard Red Winter wheat.

Enhancing US wheat export performance: the implications of wheat cleaning
Article Abstract:
US grain exports have been traditionally covered by issues of quality and government standards. The economic issue of wheat cleaning has been noted for US exports, which bear substantial qualitative differences compared to Canadian, Australian and Argentinian wheat. Net gains are projected for increased US wheat dockage levels between 0.35 and 0.40%. Export cleaning is expected to generate revenue increases between $8-$11 million.

The cost of forward contracting wheat
Article Abstract:
Parametric and nonparametric regression analyses are used to measure farmer costs for forward contracting services covering hard red winter wheat without qualitative differences. An inverse relationship is observed between farmer costs for such services and harvest periods. Forward contracting also displayed higher costs compared to hedging, indicating a farmer's need to balance risk reduction benefits and contracting costs.
