Still battling the ozone stigma
Article Abstract:
The consumer products industry cannot figure out how to package its liquid products. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which harm the ozone layer, are thought to be in aerosols even though that use of CFCs has been banned since 1978. Aerosols now use hydrocarbons, which are full of smog-contributing volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In response, some in the industry package their products both as aerosols and as nonaerosols. But sometimes nonaerosols have more VOCs than aerosols. Regulation of VOCs and consumer concern about flammability will probably greatly reduce use of propellants high in VOCs.

A new school of pool sharks
Article Abstract:
Billiard playing has become a popular leisure-time pursuit, and many upscale pool parlors are opening their doors. Since 1989, the number of parlors has increased 25% and now totals 4000. Of the approximately 39 million people who play billiards, a third of them are women. About 52% of those who play billiards fall into the 18-to-34 age bracket. The principal reasons for the rise in players and parlors are the perceived inexpensiveness of the game and the lavishness of the newer, upscale parlors. Three upscale parlors - Amsterdam Billiard Club, Shark Club, and Jillian's - are profiled.
