Strategic groups and performance: the U.S. insurance industry, 1970-84
Article Abstract:
A strategic group analysis of the insurance industry between 1970 and 1984 is presented using a framework for the development of strategic groups proposed in previous research which stresses the importance of company strategy. Research results indicate that different strategic groups demonstrate performance differences. Research results also indicate that the makeup of strategic groups, including membership and number, change over time. Additionally, results suggest that the framework may be useful for creating dynamic theories of strategic group movement and for comprehending competitive positioning.

The linkage between strategy, strategic groups, and performance in the U.K. retail grocery industry
Article Abstract:
The relationship between performance and strategy was studied by examining UK grocery stores with similar competitive strategies, or 'strategic groups.' Various grouping procedures suggested that there were variations in performance across groups for return on sales, but not for return on capital employed or price-earnings ratios. Strategic groups appeared to be useful in the investigation of industry structure and strategy, but they did not appear to explain differences in performance. Consistent patterns existed in the positioning of the primary strategic groups of grocery stores.

Strategic groups: theory, research and taxonomy
Article Abstract:
Arguing that theoretical concepts such as isolating mechanisms, mobility barriers and controllable variables provide firmer ground for studies on strategic group identification, the use of vertical integration is discouraged. Focusing on intra-industry strategic groupings, directions for strategic group research are suggested. Also discussed is the use of taxonomies for understanding the nature of strategic group formation.
