Survey of members. (Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland's strategy review), (part two)
Article Abstract:
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland's Strategy Review surveyed ICAS members through 29 unstructured telephone interviews and a structured questionnaire mailed to 1,726 members, of whom 853 members responded. The results of the questionnaire survey reveal a degree of apathy in regards to member services: 42% were noncommittal on whether the ICAS devotes too little time to addressing the needs of the members. Members outside of general practice reported greater dissatisfaction with the ICAS: 43% are 'very or quite satisfied', while 20% are 'dissatisfied', compared to 59% and 13% among practitioners. Results indicate that there is a need to improve the level of awareness to the full range of ICAS services, and a need to encourage the participation of non-practitioners on ICAS committees and working parties.

The Girobank experience
Article Abstract:
Girobank, which was founded in 1969 as part of the UK Post Office, implemented a total quality management program in 1987. Girobank implemented the BS 5750 quality management system under the tutelage of the British Standards Institute. The awareness program involved all members of staff in order to involve them with implementing Quality Operating Procedures. Part of BS 5750 entails an evaluation of staff members by an evaluator outside of the organization. Two-way communications, which kept everyone well-informed, was vital to the project's success. The BS 5750 was instrumental in creating an atmosphere of continual improvement.

The SDA strategy for total quality
Article Abstract:
Japanese businesses have achieved success by making total quality management based on the philosophy of management philosopher W. Edwards Deming an integral part of their production processes. The Scottish Development Agency (SDA) has implemented a series of Quality Forums throughout Scotland that it hopes will raise the awareness of the benefits of Total Quality to business and promote the adoption of Total Quality programs. Part of the campaign will be the creation of a Scottish Quality Network that will organize and promote events associated with the promotion of quality management.
